Tras Os Montes

Tras-os-Montes e Alto Douro is a historic northeastern region that borders Salamanca, Zamora and Orense. This corner of the corners of Europe is enclosed and protected to the north and east by the Sierra de Montesinho and the Natural Park of Douro Internacional. To the south, the Duero River continues its course and embraces it. To the west it is delimited by the River Támega and numerous mountains separate the interior from the neighboring coastal areas. These magnificent natural barriers contain the genuine universe that this isolated place and its people still preserve.

In this territory, once protected by the Celtic gods and whose tangible and intangible heritage dates back to prehistory, a world of legend remains hidden from civilization. For centuries, although more prominently from the second half of the 20th century, Tras-Os-Montes has inspired native authors and bewitched foreign artists and writers. Many songs, articles, books and visual documents call on our imagination and make us dream of a remote, poor and depopulated place; of people with an adventurous spirit, but at the same time austere and rooted in their land, and whom progress has long left behind. A visit to this “marvelous kingdom” always leaves an indelible memory in the traveler.

WORK IN PROGRESS.
